Val d'Isère
Of all the “Vals” in the world (such as Val d’Arly, Val Thorens, Val Doonican, Val Kilmer and my Aunt Val), it is telling that “Val” refers to Val d’Isère. It’s a cult thing; many aficionados of Val d’Isère would just not ski elsewhere. It’s the steeps & deeps, the snowpark and the abundance of world class free-ride zones with more than 25000 acres of accessible backcountry skiing. It’s not all insanity though, there is plenty for the green and blue runners too!

TRAVEL
Flying - There are a few options when it comes to your destination airport; but Geneva is the recommended option because of greater flexibility for transfers and car hire to take you onto Val d'Isère. The transfer is 225 kms and takes around 2 hours 50 minutes.
Train - The Eurostar glides through France directly from London St Pancras to Bourg-Saint-Maurice in a little over seven-and-a-half hours and, from there, it’s 32km on to Val d'Isère with transfer options available.
Driving - Drivers will find the roads through France faster and emptier than those in the UK and this is largely down to them being toll roads…so there is a price to pay! London to Val d'Isère takes around 12 hours 30 minutes without stops and this includes the tunnel crossing.
SUPERMARKETS AND RESTAURANTS
For those driving in, you might want to stop in Albertville or Bourg St Maurice to stock up at one of the cheaper supermarkets on the way up the mountain, alternatively, there are two local supermarkets in resort with long opening hours.
As you would expect there are a few restaurants to choose from in Val, both on the pistes and in town. We just have two top tips we want to share......check out Patrick Chevallot’s boulangerie in the main street.....trust us! And if you're looking for something special try L’Atelier d’Edmond with a rare and coveted two Michelin stars.
Val d’Isère has one of the best nightlife scenes in Europe from la Folie Douce up on the slopes to some “institutions” in town: Dick’s Tea Bar, Cocorico & Le Petit Danois. You won’t have to look too hard for a place to drink…
THINGS TO DO IN RESORT
With your in-residence spa and swimming pool, you may have all you need if you're not out on the pistes. However, there are plenty of other distractions in Val d’Isère…cinema, husky-dog ride, the usual ice activities (including ice-diving!), sledging and skidooing. Our favourite thing to do in Val d’Isère is to spend an evening having dinner in a wilderness camp and finishing the night with a drink by the fire and torchlit sledge ride back down the mountain. It is only open to those over the age of 14 years old, but a great thing to do with the family!
The Val d’Isere ski instructors at night performing their torch-lit descent down La Face is also well worth a watch. Not only will you see the torch lit descent, but they will be followed by a stunning firework display. It can vary which day this takes place so make sure you check when in resort.
